Lesson 2 of 4

How to Play Filipino Mahjong

Master the unique 16-tile variant of Mahjong popular in the Philippines.

The Goal

The objective of Filipino Mahjong is to be the first to arrange your hand into 5 groups of three (melds) and one pair.

A winning hand always has 17 tiles total (16 in your hand plus the winning drawn tile).

Gameplay Cycle

Each player starts with 16 tiles. The turn cycle is simple:

  1. Draw: Draw a tile from the wall, or claim the last discarded tile if it completes a meld.
  2. Meld (Optional): If you claim a discard, you must reveal the meld.
  3. Discard: Choose one tile from your hand to discard, keeping your hand at 16 tiles.

Special Priority Rule

If multiple players want to claim the same discard, Todas (Winning) always has priority. Otherwise, Pong and Kang take priority over Chow.

Winning: Todas & Bunot

There are two ways to get that final 17th tile and win the game:

  • Todas: You win by claiming a discard from another player. The player who discarded the tile pays double!
  • Bunot: You win by drawing the tile yourself from the wall. In this case, all players pay you double.
